The lowdown
Pop the tail, drag your front foot up the board and level it out in the air. Every other trick in skateboarding is built on top of this one.
Alan Gelfand did the first one in a pool around 1978. Rodney Mullen took it to flat ground and the whole sport changed.
Tips
Snap the tail hard and slide the front foot straight up to the nose. Jump with the board, don't just flick and hope.
Why it isn't working4 common mistakes
Pop and slide as two moves. Snap the tail and start the front foot sliding in the same instant.
Not crouching before the pop. Bend deep first; the height comes from how low you start.
Shoulders twisted across the board. Keep your shoulders in line with the deck, or the board turns in the air.
Popping the tail at an angle. Stamp the tail straight down; a sideways pop spins you off line.

Where to practise
Flat tricks want smooth flat ground. find spots with flat near you →
Where it sits
Why it's Easy: Easy rather than Rookie because the board leaves the ground for the first time, and it only does so if the pop, the slide and the jump happen together. Nothing before it needed timing.
