The lowdown

Rolling backwards with the tail leading. Nothing else changes: same stance, same feet. You are just going the other way and looking over your shoulder.

Fun fact

Every half cab and every fakie spin starts here. Get comfortable rolling backwards early and a whole branch of the library opens up.

Tips

Ride up a gentle bank, let it push you back down and hold it instead of turning out. Look where you are going, not at the deck.

Why it isn't working4 common mistakes

  1. Leaning back as you roll. Lean slightly over the bars; leaning back makes the front wheel wander.

  2. Steering the way you expect. Turn the bars the opposite way to where you want to go.

  3. Staring down at the deck. Look over your shoulder at where you are going.

  4. Going too fast at first. Roll gently up a small bank and let it push you back slowly.

Why it's Rookie: Nothing before it and Rookie because nothing leaves the ground. What is new is that the steering feels backwards, and your body has to trust a direction it cannot see straight ahead.
