The lowdown

Weight back to lighten the front wheel, then swivel the scooter round to point somewhere else while you are still rolling. This is how you steer properly.

Fun fact

It is the only way to change direction on a bank or in a bowl without putting a foot down.

Tips

Roll slowly and keep the lift tiny. A centimetre is plenty. Turn your shoulders first and the scooter follows.

Why it isn't working4 common mistakes

  1. Kicking too hard. Nudge the front round; a small push turns you plenty.

  2. Not lightening the front wheel. Put a little weight on your back foot so the front can swing.

  3. Looking down at the wheel. Look where you want to end up; your body follows.

  4. Turning the bars, not your shoulders. Turn your shoulders first and let the scooter come round after.

Why it's Rookie: Rookie because you barely lift anything, and you can put the wheel down whenever you like. The point is learning to lighten the front and turn with your shoulders, which every spin uses later.
