Riding Fakie

Rolling with the tail leading instead of the nose, standing exactly as you normally would.

Difficulty
Rookie
Can you do it?

The lowdown

Rolling with the tail leading instead of the nose, standing exactly as you normally would. You are going backwards, not switching feet.

Fun fact

Half cabs, fakie ollies and every fakie flip trick need this first. It is the cheapest doorway in the whole library.

Tips

Ride up a bank, let it roll you back down and hold it rather than kick-turning out. Glance over your shoulder, do not twist round.

Why it isn't working4 common mistakes

  1. Twisting the whole body to look. Turn only your head; keep hips and shoulders square over the board.

  2. Weight sliding onto the front foot. Keep a little more weight on the back foot, which is now leading.

  3. Stiff, straight legs. Bend your knees; you cannot balance backwards with locked legs.

  4. Rushing to turn back round. Hold the fakie roll for a few metres before you kick-turn out of it.

Why it's Rookie: Rookie because your feet never move and nothing pops. The difficulty is only that your body has to trust a direction it cannot see well.
