The lowdown

Like a cartwheel, but your legs snap together over the top and you land on both feet facing back the way you came. It is the power move that starts most backward tumbling.

Fun fact

The same entry, onto a springboard, is how Yurchenko vaults begin.

Tips

Hurdle in with arms by your ears, lunge low and reach long for the floor. Turn late, snap your legs together after vertical and push hard through your shoulders.

Why it isn't working4 common mistakes

  1. Hands going down too early and short. Reach forward past your front knee to keep a straight line.

  2. Second hand not facing backwards. Turn the second hand fully back; it steers the turn.

  3. Weak kick of the back leg. Swing your back leg up hard with a wide split.

  4. Piking down on the landing. Push through your shoulders and land in a tight hollow shape.

Why it's Gold: It needs a clean front-to-back cartwheel and a strong kick, plus a shoulder push that most recreational gymnasts build slowly.
