The lowdown

Balancing along on the back wheel with the nose held up, rolling as far as you can. Pure control. It lives in your hips and ankles.

Fun fact

Manuals get judged on distance. Riders hold them clean across an entire car park in line competitions.

Tips

Find the balance point and hold it with tiny ankle taps. Look ahead, not down, and you'll ride it way longer.

Why it isn't working4 common mistakes

  1. Yanking the bars up hard. Lift gently and stop at the balance point rather than blasting past it.

  2. Locking your knees. Keep both knees soft so small dips and bumps do not throw you off.

  3. Chasing it with your arms. Steer the balance with your hips and back foot; your arms stay relaxed.

  4. Rolling too slowly. A steady walking pace gives you time to correct; crawling makes every wobble bigger.

Why it's Easy: A bunny hop is over in a moment; a manual asks you to hold a balance point for metres. Too little lift and the wheel drops, too much and you loop out backwards.
