Flyout Tailwhip

Air out of a quarter onto the deck and kick the frame a full lap around…

Difficulty
Gnarly
Can you do it?

The lowdown

Air out of a quarter onto the deck and kick the frame a full lap around the bars and forks, catching it back under your feet.

Fun fact

Flyouts are how nearly everyone learns whips. The bunny hop version comes later, once the kick and the catch are automatic.

Tips

Any ramp with a big enough deck works, and you get to take it at your own pace. Go easy on the reps. Your wrists take a beating on flyout landings.

Why it isn't working4 common mistakes

  1. Carving into the flyout. Hit the ramp dead straight; there is nothing to gain from an angle on this one.

  2. Kicking the bike out and away. Kick it down and round so the frame stays under you instead of flying ahead of you.

  3. Sitting back over the rear. Get your weight over the front end the moment the whip starts; that is where the control is.

  4. Catching with the frame still tilted. Push the bars forward as the whip comes round so the bike is level when you catch it.

Why it's Gnarly: Every trick before it keeps your feet on the pedals. Here both feet leave the bike while the frame spins a full lap, and you have to find the pedals again before you land.
