The lowdown

Ride into the corner of a bowl and follow the curved wall round in one smooth line, without leaving the surface. Lean with the wall and look round the corner to where you want to come out.

Fun fact

Carving is where bowl riding starts. Every line through a bowl, and every air out of a corner, is built on being able to hold speed round the wall.

Tips

Start low on the wall and go a little higher each lap. Stand up with your pedals level, and push with your legs through the corner to come out faster than you went in.

Why it isn't working4 common mistakes

  1. Looking at the front wheel. Look round the corner to your exit, and the bike will follow your eyes.

  2. Sitting down through the corner. Stand on level pedals with your knees and elbows bent so you can pump.

  3. Going in too slowly. Take enough speed to stay on the wall, because the tyres grip better when you are moving.

  4. Turning the bars sharply. Lean the bike with the wall and steer gently instead of yanking the front wheel round.

Why it's Rookie: It is pumping a ramp turned sideways. There is nothing to hop or catch, only a line to hold while the wall curves under you.
