Backside Air

Fly out above the coping, grab, turn and…

Difficulty
Gnarly
Can you do it?

The lowdown

Fly out above the coping, grab, turn and drop back into the transition.

Fun fact

Tony Alva's backside airs in the 70s are why vert skating looks the way it does.

Tips

Look back down the ramp as you turn. Keep the grab until the wheels are pointed at the ramp.

Why it isn't working4 common mistakes

  1. Turning early on the wall. Ride straight up until the front truck is above the coping, then turn in the air.

  2. Too much speed for the ramp. Just enough speed to clear the coping; extra speed sends you out over the flat.

  3. Landing sideways. Bring the shoulders all the way round so the board points down the transition before the wheels touch.

  4. Reaching down for the board. Pull your knees up to your hand rather than bending to the board.

What you need

Skateboard, helmet, and pads for any transition. Learn this one into foam or resi first

Why it's Gnarly: The indy taught you to leave the lip and grab. Now you add a half turn in the air, with the ramp behind you as you rotate and only a moment to find it again.
