The lowdown
A short run, a hurdle step onto the springboard with both feet together, and a tall stretch jump off it to land on the mat. Every vault starts here.
Feet in front of the hips turn the board into a pivot, so your run becomes an up-and-forward arc. That arc is what later carries you over a box.
Tips
Land on the board with your feet slightly in front of your hips, not under them. Swing your arms from behind you up past your ears as you leave it.
Why it isn't working4 common mistakes
Slowing down just before the board. Keep the run fast all the way in; a slow run-up gives the board nothing to send back.
Feet landing right under your hips. Reach your feet forward onto the board so it sends you up and forward, not just up.
Landing on the board one foot first. Step off one foot and join both feet in the air so they punch the board together.
Bouncing twice on the board. Make one contact and go; a second bounce loses the spring and costs marks in competition.

Where it sits
Why it's Bronze: The first thing on vault, done straight onto a mat. The only new idea is a two-foot punch on the board from a run.
