The lowdown

Arms straight, hands on top of the bar, and the bar resting against the front of your hips. Nearly every trick on top of the bar starts and finishes here.

Fun fact

At the first US development levels, judges watch front support closely, because every cast, kip and swing later depends on it.

Tips

Push the bar down so your shoulders stay tall and your body holds a slight hollow. A straight-arm jump into front support is a good first drill.

Why it isn't working4 common mistakes

  1. Collapsing at the shoulders. Push down through straight arms so your shoulders rise away from the bar.

  2. Piking at the hips. Squeeze your bottom and hold one long, slightly hollow line to your toes.

  3. Soft, bent elbows. Lock your elbows before you take your feet off the floor.

  4. Bent legs and floppy feet. Keep your legs straight and together with your toes pointed.

Why it's Bronze: You are only holding still with your feet off the floor. It needs pushing strength rather than nerve, and it is the base for everything above the bar.
