The lowdown

Pedal hard and pull up on the bars so the front wheel lifts, then keep pedalling to hold it there. The whole trick is finding the point where the bike balances and staying on it.

Fun fact

It teaches you where the balance point lives. Manuals and everything built on them start from this feeling.

Tips

Sit down, stay in a low gear and cover your back brake with one finger. A tap of that brake drops the front end back before you loop out.

Why it isn't working4 common mistakes

  1. Pulling the front up with your arms. Snap your hips back as you push the first pedal stroke and let the bars come up on their own.

  2. Pedalling too hard and looping out. Keep the pedal strokes small and even, and tap the back brake the moment it climbs too high.

  3. Steering with big handlebar turns. Keep your shoulders square and steer with tiny hip shifts instead.

  4. Staring down at the front wheel. Look far ahead and pick a line; the bike follows your eyes.

Why it's Rookie: There is nothing before it, and the bike helps: pedalling holds the height and a brake tap drops it, so it forgives more than a manual does.
